Bradford Dragons will enjoy their Christmas sitting in second place despite losing their 7 game winning streak on Sunday. Bradford travelled to an in form Essex Leopards and unfortunately lost their first match in 8 - a fiercely fought encounter, 78-73 in overtime.
The game was always going to be the highlight of the week’s English Basketball League div 1 matches as the two sides with only one loss duked it out in Essex. Bradford began their outing boasting a superb record of 7 wins and one loss, Essex held a respectable 5 wins and one loss.
Bradford led for almost the entirety of the game, again marshalled by their Americans, centre Chris McGrew and the unstoppable shooting guard Dan Foley. Foley had 23 points, 12 rebounds and no turnovers playing the whole of the 45 minute contest.
The Dragons remained extremely strong both defensively and offensively throughout regulation time, replying to anything the leopards could throw at them. However the Leopards home support began to benefit them as they went on a vital 8-0 run late in the fourth quarter.
The Dragons trailed by 6 late in the fourth quarter. The visitors then looked to danger man Foley for some inspiration and the New York native did not disappoint. He produced back to back 3-pointers to tie game with 54 seconds remaining. The Dragons then held out to take the game into overtime.
Carl Pearson opened the overtime scoring giving Bradford the lead with two free throws however led by the heroics of another EBL American - Leopard Kris Clarke, the home side went on another 8-0 run to put the game out of the reach of a battling Bradford team.
Next Dragons 1 home game is the crucial National League double header weekend games against Manchester Magic on Saturday 04/01/14, tip off 6.15pm and Essex Leopards on Sunday 5/1/14 at 2.15pm, both in the Dragons Den, Trinity Green sports hall, Bradford College, Trinity Road, Bradford BD5 0JE. Admission is £5 for adults, £2.50 for under 18s, students, concessions etc and £10 for a family ticket [2 adults + 2 children]. Leopards are both currently battling with Dragons for a top spot in the league
Elsewhere for Dragons, going into the Xmas break, Dragons U16 stay second in the EBL north east conference division, Dragons U15 comfortably beat visitors Barnsley Leaders 89 – 42 to stay top of the EBL north east division ahead of unbeaten Sheffield Saints, Dragons U14 travelled to Liverpool to win 125 – 37 and stay second in EBL U14 north behind unbeaten Manchester Magic but pride of place goes to Dragons U13 as they stay perfect on the season with 9 wins and stay top of the EBL U13 north division.
