Press Release - 02nd March 2014

DRAGONS SLAY THE MOHAWKS 89 – 71 AT HOME THEN WIN 90 – 59 AT LEICESTER WARRIORS

With injured players returning, Dragons had a near full team to dominate visitors Tees Valley Mohawks and secure a comfortable home win by 89 – 71. The Dragons team defence swarmed all over the high scoring Mohawk guards and contained them to lead 29 – 13 at the first break with a buzzer beating triple from Nathan Ashley. The second quarter was much the same as Dragons threatened to run away with the game as Mohawks could not get easy looks and Dragons led 52 – 26 at half time. Mindful of the Leicester game the following day and players returning from injury, Dragons eased off in the third stanza as Coach Chris Mellor rotated players to lead 70 – 51 at the final break. In the final quarter, with the dangerous Alex Greven finding his range for Mohawks, the visitors closed the gap but Dragons ran out comfortable winners 89 – 71.

Coach Chris Mellor said after the game, ‘I thought we played really well first half at both ends. After the break they played much better and hurt us in transition a few too many times but overall it was a good performance’.
