Bradford School Baskets Boost to Funding

28/6/2017

Bradford Dragons Basketball Club joined forces with Thornton Primary School, last week, to raise more than £1600 in a sponsored free throw event.

Over six hundred children, aged between three and eleven years old, took part in the event and were joined by the Dragons 6’8” American power forward, Ricky Fetske, along with the club’s Chairman, Steve Valentine. Children were sponsored to take three shots at the basket, with the funds raised being evenly split between the school and the Bradford Dragons Community Foundation.

The event was organised by year four teacher Mr Carter, who also has a role as an operational director at the basketball club. “This was a fantastic opportunity to bring together my passions for both teaching and for the sport of basketball. It is widely known that schools are facing significant cuts to their Government funding and therefore need to find other ways of raising the required finance. This event provided a great opportunity to raise much needed funds for the school, whilst also providing resources for the basketball club, which we will use to deliver opportunities for more children in the region to access the sport. Basically, it was a win-win situation for both the school and the club. Basketball is a fantastic sport and this now provides the Dragons with the ability to offer children throughout Bradford and the surrounding region, opportunity to engage with the game.”

As an incentive for the children, all participants that raised £5 or more qualified to receive either a bronze, silver or gold medal, dependent upon how many baskets they managed to score from their three attempts. In addition to this, children that raised £30 also received an authentic Basketball England branded basketball, whilst the child that raised the most money also received a limited-edition Bradford Dragons varsity jacket.

Mr Carter added, “It was a fantastic day and all the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. To raise so much money into the bargain was absolutely amazing.”

Following the success of the event, the Dragons are now hoping to roll the event out to other schools and youth organisations within the region. Anybody requiring further information should contact the club via info@bradforddragons.co.uk.
